What Are the Pros and Cons of Popular Deck Materials?

Installing a deck is one of the best investments you can make for your home. This outdoor living space is versatile and can add value to your property. You can use it for family barbecues, gathering with friends and relaxing during the weekends. When planning to build a deck, one of the most crucial decisions you have to make is to choose a durable material.

To help you make the best decision for your project, a home renovations expert shares the pros and cons of popular deck materials.

Wood Decking

Wood decking remains the most popular choice when it comes to outdoor decks. This material is known for its authenticity, strength and ease of installation. Many homeowners choose wood because it feels good under their bare feet. Pressure-treated is the most preferred type of wood deck, but you can also go for redwood, cedar and tropical hardwoods.

If you wish to install a wood deck, you must be prepared to maintain it yearly. Keep in mind that wood is more prone to rot, warping and splintering. To maintain its appeal, make sure to clean and restain your wood deck every two to three years.

Composite Decking

Those who love the appearance and warmth of natural wood, but don’t want to worry about constant upkeep should consider composite decking. It resembles the look of natural wood and is available in various colors and grain patterns. Composite is popular in outdoor home renovations because it does not splinter nor require staining or painting.

Made from mixing a blend of plastic and reclaimed wood fibers, composite boards are durable, resistant to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and easy to maintain. While they come at a higher price, they are heavier and not as still as natural wood. Thanks to their flexibility, they are less prone to damage due to temperature changes. Moreover, composite decking utilizes special fasteners to keep bumps from rising around screw heads.

Plastic or PVC Decking

Another popular decking option is cellular polyvinyl chloride (PVC) vinyl decking. It’s completely made from environmentally safe plastic, meaning it offers better durability than composite. When maintained properly, it can last for decades. One reason its demand is increasing is that it requires very little maintenance. You only need to clean a PVC deck occasionally.

The downside of this material is that it does not always appear, feel and sound like authentic wood. Some products can look cheap, feel slippery and go through more color changes than wood. It typically has a complex fastening system to allow movement as the temperature changes. PVC decking often comes at a higher price tag composite, and its cost mainly depends on its design and quality. To make the most of your investment, be sure to hire an experienced contractor for your project.

Aluminum Decking

Aluminum may not be as popular as other materials, it’s a great option for your deck. It’s significantly lighter and durable than vinyl, composite and wood. With an aluminum deck, you don’t need to worry about issues, such as mold growth and pest infestation. It is rigid, recyclable, slip-resistant and less vulnerable to weather damage.

Superior longevity is something you can count on an aluminum deck. It’s all because of its baked-on or anodized finish. However, because of its long lifespan, it is also costlier than other deck materials. People who prefer the look of natural wood tend to skip aluminum. If this material isn’t for you, Ben’s Construction Inc can help you select one that best suits your home and design goals. We offer a wide selection of high-quality products for deck projects.

Polystyrene or EPS Decking

Featuring deep underside groves, expanded polystyrene (EPS) decking is strong, lightweight and stiff. Its hidden clip system makes fasteners not as noticeable. Since it has a non-slip surface, there is a lower risk of slip accidents when it rains or the material gets wet. You can get it in six different colors that look like natural wood.

Bluestone

Known for being organic and its rich hue, bluestone can elevate the appeal of traditional structures. It has a non-slip surface, making it a great fit for areas that experience a lot of rain. You may also want to consider this material if you have a swimming pool in your yard. The con of bluestone is that it can turn uncomfortably hot when exposed to direct sunlight. If you want a cooler stone, travertine is a better alternative.

Tips for a Successful Deck Building Project

Choose a Cost-Effective Material

When choosing a deck material, make sure to consider maintenance and longevity besides appeal and cost. For instance, composite decks may have a higher upfront cost than other options, but it doesn’t need as much upkeep. Meanwhile, wood needs more frequent cleaning and refinishing every few years. It means you will enjoy more savings in the long run with a composite deck.

Hire Skilled Professionals

Among the best ways to ensure your property stays strong and appealing is to work with skilled home exterior professionals. Even high-quality materials are likely to fail early when not installed and maintained properly. Keep in mind that installing a deck isn’t as easy as it looks on home improvement shows and online tutorials. Mistakes during the installation can compromise the structural integrity and lifespan of your outdoor living space.

Secure Permits Before Construction Starts

Don’t forget to secure permits to avoid issues in the later stages of construction. Depending on your location, obtaining permits may or may not be necessary for your new deck. When planning your project, check your local building codes and who should be responsible for getting permits if they are needed.
